What IS Frac Sand?

Frac Sand is silica sand used as a proppant in hydraulic fracturing, a process used to extract oil and gas from shale rock. Hydraulic fracturing is when deep, underground rock formations are fractured, creating cracks through which oil and gas can be extracted. The cracks created in the rock formation are propped open by injecting water and sand into the fractures in the rock.

The mining of frac sand in Manitoba not only requires the destruction of mature growth spruce forests, negatively influences the air quality but also supports the destruction of other lands where hydraulic fracturing is taking place.
